Dermatology is the specialty that deals with the skin, mucous membranes, nails, hair, and body hair. The dermatologist diagnoses, treats (both medically and surgically), and prevents skin diseases and minor imperfections.
Dermatology is also associated with the study of sexually-transmitted infections, since most of them manifest themselves through lesions of the skin and mucous membranes.
Dermatological diseases are often related to other conditions, so the dermatologist frequently works in coordination with general practitioners or other specialists. It is recommended to have your skin checked every year to prevent melanomas and carcinomas.

INVESTIGATION: The dermatologist interviews the patient to find out about the reason for the consultation, allergies, personal, medical, and family history, professional and daily activities, and lifestyle.
PHYSICAL EXAMINATION: The dermatologist then physically examines the patient’s skin, nails, or hair, depending on the reason for consultation.
DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT: The dermatologist shares their diagnosis with the patient. They may prescribe a treatment or additional examinations, or carry out an intervention (biopsy, excision). They may also refer the patient to a colleague if the diagnosis is not solely dermatological. A follow-up appointment is often scheduled.
