« Pain is always real. »

Originally from Madeira, Dr. Mónica Velosa is a gastroenterologist with a passion for the complex interactions between the nervous system and the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. She studies disorders of the gut-brain axis – the bi-directional communication network between the brain, the central nervous system, the enteric nervous system (which governs the gastrointestinal tract) and the gut microbiota.

After gaining international experience, first during her training in neurogastroenterology at the Amsterdam Medical Centre, and then as a specialist working in Paris, Tel Aviv and London, Dr Mónica Velosa returned to her home country after almost a decade abroad.

Dr Mónica Velosa favours an integrative and multidisciplinary approach, working hand in hand with specialists in nutrition, psychology, psychiatry and complementary therapies such as naturopathy, hypnotherapy, mindfulness and sophrology. She believes that every symptom is as important as any scientific evidence, and so encourages her patients to listen to their bodies, beyond the test results.
